LOCAL NOTES.
Since the establishment of the side-track, the railroad company has sold not
less than 1000 tickets to Rock Island, and has hauled to Rock Island over 100
full cars of freight, including the teams, tools, furniture, etc., brought in by our
settlers, and in addition all of the local freight which is naturally received by a
community of this size.
To the energy of Mr. Melvin Hart of Dickens, Clay county, Iowa, is to be
attributed the erection of the first house on the quarter section adjoining the town
of Rock Island, and he is entitled to the distinction of the "pioneer settler."
Mr. D. A. Black, from Pleasant Green, Mo., started the first building on the
town site proper February 15, 1896, to which he has added two extensive
buildings since to accommodate his increasing business, and he built the first
dwelling house for the use and comfort of his family, which dwelling was
unfortunately burned one night last May.
Mr. James L. Foley, from Marshall county, Mo., was one of the first to build
in the town, and soon had the pleasure of introducing his bride to his cozy cottage
home. Mr. Foley has a livery stable and livery equipment that would be a credit
to a town of 3000 people.
Mr. N. C. Rigg and his father from El Dorado Springs, Mo., seized this
opportunity for a good start with a growing community, and bought 480 acres
adjoining Rock Island; also 50 lots in the town, and built the first lumber office,167
